Professional Educator Groups

Teacher unions attempt to give the impression that they speak for all teachers. In fact, the National Education Association's imposition of a unified dues structure in combination with the passage of legislation giving public sector unions monopoly bargaining privileges in many states has allowed the National Education Association and to a lesser degree, the American Federation of Teachers to impose its representation on many teachers who do not support unionism.

There is a growing trend throughout the country which is strongest in states, which have not adopted laws giving the unions monopoly privileges, for teachers to join and support independent organizations offering teachers an alternative to unionism. These organizations have about 300,000 members.

Some but not all of these independent organizations are involved in the Coalition of Independent Education Associations, which meets twice a year. Further information about this may be obtained through the Foundation.

The following is a list of independent educator organizations and links to their E-mail addresses and web sites, where available. The Foundation is providing this information as a service to educators and others who are interested in these organizations. The fact that they are listed on this page does not imply that they support the Foundation's goals or that they are in any way associated with the Foundation or with each other. We welcome contacts from independent educator organizations which we have neglected to list on this page.
